Bail Bond Scams Target Orlando Families. Here Is How to Stay Safe.

Bail Bond Scams Target Orlando Families. Here Is How to Stay Safe.

When someone you love is arrested, the hours that follow are some of the most stressful you will ever go through. You want them home, and you want it to happen fast. Scammers know this, and they use it against families every single day.

At Mike Snapp Bail Bonds, we see this happen with nearly every person booked into the Orange County Jail. Within hours of an arrest, the calls start. We want you to know exactly how these scams work so you can protect yourself and your money during an already painful time.

How the Scam Works

As soon as a person is booked into jail, their arrest becomes public record. Scammers watch this information and quickly search for the names and phone numbers of close relatives. They do not stop at parents. They call siblings, grandparents, cousins, and even distant relatives. We have seen them reach people who barely have any connection to the person arrested.

Once they have you on the phone, they claim to be someone you would trust. Sometimes they say they are law enforcement and read off a fake badge number. Other times they say they are calling from the jail. Then comes the pitch. They tell you your loved one can be released early on a GPS monitor or through a special program because the jail is overcrowded. All you have to do is send money right away through an app like Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle.

They ask for those apps on purpose. Once the money is sent, it is almost impossible to get back.

Why It Works

These callers are convincing. They sound official, they speak with authority, and they create a sense of urgency. They are reaching you at the worst possible moment, when you are frightened, not thinking clearly, and willing to do almost anything to bring your family member home. That is exactly what they are counting on. We have spoken with people who lost thousands of dollars this way, and many more who came very close.

Warning Signs to Watch For

You can protect yourself by knowing what a real bail process never looks like. Be very cautious if a caller does any of the following:

  • Claims you can pay for a release through Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or a similar app
  • Says your loved one qualifies for early release because the jail is full
  • Pressures you to send money immediately, before you can verify anything
  • Will not let you call them back through a number you already trust
  • Asks for gift cards or a wire transfer of any kind

What Is Actually True

The jail does not call families to collect money for an early release. A legitimate release on a monitor or through a program is handled through the court and your bond agent, never through a cash app payment to a stranger on the phone. A licensed bail bondsman will always explain the process clearly, put the terms in writing, and let you verify exactly who they are.

What to Do If You Get One of These Calls

Slow down. Do not send any money. Hang up if you feel pressured. Then call us directly. We are glad to tell you whether what you were told is real, look into your loved one's status, and walk you through the actual next steps. There is never a charge to ask.
